The Magnum IA.170 Integrated

The Magnum lA 170 70wpc integrated amp is solid-state, of course. At $750, this amp isn't built as beefy as the Anthem Integrated 1 (reviewed in the same article), however, it has more features. No, I'm not referring to silly, useless stuff I'm talkin' about a very good phono stage, one hot headphone amp, and a mono switch. Now, for those unfortunate souls who don't own any great mono recordings, this switch can still prove useful if, for some reason your room or its furnishings aren't symmetrical, then use the mono switch, center the image with the balance control, and unswitch the mono. Now you can rock & roll with the satisfaction that you have a centered stereo image. Now check out the looks: the whole front is highly polished stainless steel. Isn’t this a pleasant relief from the ubiquitous black faceplate. Let's spin some discs already!

The timbral purity of the Magnum produced exceptional brass with good bite, but a slight loss of body was prevalent throughout TRlTTlCO. This was also true on BIG BAND BASIE, despite the well-formed sound of the percussion, piano, and saxophone. The effect was that of a little leanness. On Nirvana’s UNPLUGGED, the vocals were incisive, as were the guitar and drum kit. Most rock seemed well-served on the IA170. So, we've got a rocker tucked behind the mirror here!

Initial transient attacks were fast with good let-go of the note. Yeah, ‘twas quite exciting for more than just rock, as I listened to the crispness of the snares and the shimmer of the cymbals on TRlTTlCO. Timing was enhanced by the Magnum's transient resolution. Low-level delineation couldn't quite match the transient response, but it was still rather good. It certainly proved sufficient for the delicate timbral shadings demanded by many recordings I listened to.

Imaging was very nice, especially with BIG BAND BASIE. Harmonics were well placed, though muted at times. The soundstage was ever-so-slightly narrowed, though depth was good. The images remained solid and stable, even during the most demanding passages of TRlTTlCO.

The phono stage is outstanding. The IA170 was obviously built with LPs in mind! This baby swings with vinyl! Yes, the sound is still a bit lean, but it's not going to bug anyone at this price point. Let's be real. This little gem is will appeal to the budget gourmet. Oh, what a treat of a meal deal! If you have a decent set of headphones, you will fall in love with the much more than competent headphone amplifier. lf you're in the market for a clean-looking system, and want to spend more money on great speakers, the Magnum lAl70 integrated amp could be what you need. You may even find the extra cash for some music, or tickets to the symphony!
